What is actually in there

We took one car seat apart on camera.

This Graco arrived looking the way most seats do: a bit crumby, nothing alarming. With the cover on, that is all you would ever see. Here is what was underneath.

  • Dried milk and a cracker in one cup holder
  • Ground-in crumbs under the seat pad
  • A raisin, a sticker and a straw under the base
  • Grit packed into the harness slots

Why it matters

San Francisco is tough on strollers.

Most strollers are too big for the washing machine and too fiddly to take apart on a weeknight. So it builds up quietly, right where your baby sits.

Fog and damp

Canopies and baskets hold moisture, which turns into musty smells and mildew spots.

Beach and playground sand

Sand from Ocean Beach and the sandpit grinds into wheels, brakes and fold joints.

Snacks and spills

Crumbs, milk and pouch drips work their way into every seam of the seat.

Muni, BART and sidewalks

Handlebars and wheels collect whatever the city leaves behind.

How it works

Book it, hand it over, get it back.

  1. Book in two minutes

Choose what needs cleaning, tell us the make and model, and pick pickup or drop-off and a window that suits you.

  2. We confirm, you pay

Within one business day we confirm your window and send a secure payment link. Paying locks the slot in.

  3. We clean it properly

We look up your model, follow its care instructions, wash the fabrics, detail the frame and wheels, then air-dry everything completely.

  4. Back within 48 hours

We return it in your window, or you collect it from us. Every piece dry, reassembled and ready to go.

Inside a Deep Clean

This is what the price pays for.

A proper clean is mostly disassembly and patience. Here is each stage on the seat above, in the order it happened.

Silent clips, about five seconds each

  1. Step 1: Look up the model

Before anything comes off, we find the care instructions for your exact make and model and follow them piece by piece.

  2. Step 2: Every fabric comes off

Pads, covers, harness sleeves and inserts. If the manufacturer says it is removable, we remove it.

  3. Step 3: Vacuumed to the bare frame

Crumbs settle in the buckle channel and under the base, where a wipe cannot reach. A crevice tool can.

  4. Step 4: Hand-washed where the label says

Dr. Bronner’s Sal Suds, a soft sponge, and water at whatever temperature the label calls for, for anything that cannot go in the machine.

  5. Step 5: Machine-washed where it is allowed

Covers that are rated for it go through the cycle the label allows with Tide Free & Gentle, then air-dry. Nothing is ever tumble-dried.

  6. Step 6: Every crevice, by hand

Cotton swabs into screw heads and harness slots. It is slow, and it is the part that makes the difference.

  7. Step 7: Frame wiped down

Harness webbing and buckles get mild soap and water only, the way the manual says. Never soaked, never anything harsh.

  8. Step 8: Dried completely, then rebuilt

Nothing goes back together until it is bone dry. Then every strap is rethreaded exactly as it was.

Our standard

The limits are the point.

A car seat is safety equipment, and a stroller has a hundred parts that were never meant for a washing machine. So we publish exactly what we will and will not do, and we follow the manufacturer’s own instructions rather than a one-method-fits-all clean.

Always

  • Follow the care instructions for your exact model, every time
  • Wash with Dr. Bronner’s Sal Suds and Tide Free & Gentle, and rinse them out properly
  • Air-dry everything completely before it comes home
  • Tell you honestly when a stain or a scuff is not coming out
  • Redo the clean free if you are not happy with it

Never

  • Soak, machine wash or use harsh chemicals on car seat harness webbing
  • Tumble-dry fabrics that the manufacturer says to air-dry
  • Use ozone generators, which are not approved for use around children
  • Take on car seats that are expired, recalled, or have been in a crash
  • Return anything that is not completely dry

The honest bit

The questions we would ask too.

We would rather answer these here than have you wonder. If something below still does not sit right, email us and ask.

What do we do without a stroller for two days?
Add Express when you book and it is back within 24 hours. If you can plan a day or two without it, the standard 48-hour return saves you the extra 20 dollars.
How do I know you will not wreck it or use something harsh on it?
We clean to your model’s own care instructions, not a generic method, which is why we ask for the make and model when you book. We wash with Dr. Bronner’s Sal Suds and Tide Free & Gentle, at whatever water temperature the manufacturer specifies, and rinse thoroughly. Car seat harnesses get mild soap and water only, because anything stronger can weaken the webbing.

Local and family-run

Hi, we’re Mark and Christine.

A stroller is one of the hardest-working things a family owns, and one of the hardest to clean properly. It is too big for the washing machine, full of crevices, and you cannot be without it for a week.

So we built the service we would want ourselves. We take it apart, clean it the way the manufacturer intended, and have it back in two days. When you book, you are dealing with the two of us, not a call center.

FAQ

Questions, answered.

Still wondering about something? Email freshstroll.sf@gmail.com and one of us will reply within one business day. It is only ever the two of us answering.

How long will I be without my gear?

Everything comes back within 48 hours of pickup. Add Express and it is back within 24 hours.

What do you need from me when I book?

What needs cleaning, the make and model of any stroller or car seat, your address, and a pickup window that suits you. The model matters: it is how we look up the exact care instructions to follow, and we will not guess.

How and when do I pay?

Once we confirm your pickup window we send a secure card link, and paying locks the slot in. We plan our routes around confirmed slots and expect the gear to be ready when we arrive, so we do not hold a time until it is paid.

Which products do you use?

Dr. Bronner’s Sal Suds for hand-washing and hard surfaces, and Tide Free & Gentle for anything the care label allows in the machine. Water temperature follows the manufacturer’s directions for each piece, and everything is rinsed thoroughly so nothing is left where little hands and mouths go.

Do you clean car seats?

Yes, within the limits the manufacturers set. Covers and pads are washed to the care label. Harness webbing and buckles get mild soap and water only, following the manufacturer’s directions, because soaking or harsh chemicals can weaken webbing in ways you cannot see. We do not accept seats that are expired, recalled or have been in a crash, and we will tell you if we spot one.

Where do you pick up and drop off, and what does it cost?

Pickup and return is $40 round trip in San Francisco and Daly City, and $55 in Pacifica, South San Francisco, Brisbane and Millbrae. If you would rather skip the fee, drop off and collect from us instead. We send the address and hours when we confirm.

Do I need to be home for pickup?

Someone needs to hand the gear over during the window you booked, or you can leave it with a concierge or in a spot we agree on in advance. We text when we are on the way.

What if a stain will not come out?

Some older stains are permanent and we will say so plainly. We never charge extra for trying. If you are not happy with the clean, tell us within 48 hours and we will redo it free.

Do you serve Oakland, Marin or the rest of the Peninsula?

Not yet. Put your ZIP code into the checker and join the waitlist. We are expanding to wherever the requests cluster first.

Ready for a fresh stroll?
